Bad habits impact: the horrible consequences

  • By Denise Nava

Hi Hero ?

Do you know which are the horrible consequences of your bad habits?

Let me give you a quick highlight.

People engage in many attempts to change their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. In so doing, they exert self-control to automatically overcome the power of stimuli to elicit reactions.

One factor common to the start of a bad habit is the influence of stress. Traumatic life events and chronic stressful experiences are associated with the development of dependences.

Other common factors that contribute to the initial phase of getting into a bad habit causing impulsivity are:

  • Sensation-seeking
  • Euphoria
  • Anxiety relief
  • Depression relief
  • Stress relief

SMOKING

Curious facts about smoking are that nicotine at lower doses has an alerting effect, resulting in increased attention and improved concentration, but at higher doses, has been reported to have a depressant effect on mood and arousal, although this effect is not as pronounced as that of alcohol.

Smoking could lead to many horrible consequences, including:

  • Cancer
  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Lung diseases
  • Diabetes
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, including emphysema and chronic bronchitis
  • Risk for tuberculosis
  • Eye diseases
  • Problems of the immune system, including rheumatoid arthritis

NAIL BITING

Besides the physiological effects, nail-biting is reported to be linked with certain psychological and psychiatric factors. Some social issues, such as prosocial ability in children, are also reported to be connected to the notorious nail-biting habit. The consequences of nail-biting range from mild to serious clinical distress and functional impairment. The symptoms associated with nail-biting are anxiety, depression, or thyroid disorders.

Excessive nail biting could lead to a series of horrible consequences, including:

  • Serious deformations of nails and a list of digestive complications
  • Chronically swollen gums, infected gums, and periodontal traumatic injuries
  • Acute paronychia (infection of the nail fold)
  • Craniomandibular dysfunction
  • Infections such as cold and flu viruses, bacteria and
  • Osteomyelitis

DRINKING

Curious facts about drinking are that low alcohol doses cause such effects as a decrease in the normal social inhibitory control of behavior, loss of motor control, incoordination, and increased reaction times, but higher alcohol doses have effects ranging from intoxication and sedation to general anesthesia.

Excessive drinking could lead to various horrible consequences, including:

  • High blood pressure
  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Liver disease
  • Digestive problems
  • Cancer of the breast, mouth, throat, esophagus, voice box, liver, colon, and rectum
  • Weakening of the immune system
  • Increasing the chances of getting sick
  • Learning and memory problems, including dementia and poor school performance

EATING JUNK

What are the harmful effects of eating junk food?

Eating junk food on a regular basis can lead to horrible consequences and the risk of:

  • Obesity
  • Chronic diseases like cardiovascular disease
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease
  • Cancers

GAMBLING

The five most common horrible consequences of gambling are:

  • Reduced spending money
  • Reduced savings
  • Feelings of regret or shame about their gambling
  • Spending less time with people they care about
